  • HP reports Q4 growth thanks to services business

    Hewlett-Packard reported an 18 percent jump in profit for its fiscal fourth quarter, thanks in large part to the strength of its services business.

    HP’s profit for the quarter ended Oct. 31 was $2.4 billion, or $0.99 per share, up from $2.1 billion, or $0.84 per share, in the same quarter last year, the company announced Monday. Revenue fell 8 percent to $30.8 billion.

    Wipro, India’s third largest outsourcer, is expanding its development center in Atlanta from 350 to 1,000 staff, reflecting a growing trend for Indian outsourcers to expand and hire locally in the U.S. market.

    The company said that 80 percent of its current 350 employees were hired locally, and includes recent graduates from reputable academic institutions in Atlanta, experienced professionals and retired army personnel.

  • Nortel sells metro Ethernet business to Ciena for $769M

    Ciena will pay $769 million for the optical networking and carrier Ethernet assets of Nortel Networks’ Metro Ethernet Networks business, the two companies said on Monday.

    Ciena emerged victorious from an auction that took place over the weekend, beating Nokia Siemens Networks. In the end Ciena had to pay about $248 million more for the Nortel business unit than its initial bid, made public on Oct. 7.

  • Hackers post new attack code for Internet Explorer

    A hacker has posted attack code that could be used to break into a PC running older versions of Microsoft’s Internet Explorer browser.

    The code was posted Friday to the Bugtraq mailing list by an unidentified hacker. According to security vendor Symantec, the code does not always work properly, but it could be used to install unauthorized software on a victim’s computer.

  • Microsoft’s IE9 to tap PC hardware for speed boost

    Microsoft’s next browser, Internet Explorer 9 (IE9), will offload image and text rendering chores to the PC’s graphic processor, one way the company plans to increase the browser’s overall performance, according to the firm’s top IE manager.

  • Report: Microsoft may pay News Corp. to delist from Google

    Microsoft has discussed paying News Corp. to remove its news Web sites from Google’s search results and list them on its Bing search engine instead, The Financial Times reported Sunday on its Web site.

    Microsoft also approached other major online publishers about removing their sites from Google, the report said.
