Photoshop CS3 is the gold standard in image processing. (Note: not in performance, stability…) It costs slightly less than an ounce of gold. Adobe’s list price is $649, but you can get it cheaper if you can swing an educational discount somehow.
Their Photoshop Elements does about 90% of what Photoshop does for a fraction of the cost; you can usually get it Costco cheap or most other stores for under $100.
There are also a number of free programs out there such as Picasa (http://picasa.google.com), which is what I recommend for most people who just want to edit their digital snapshots; probably not what you need.
There’s also Gimp (http://www.gimp.org), which many claim does everything Photoshop does; I’ve downloaded it, but I haven’t gotten around to installing it to see for myself.
There are also online photo-editing suites that might be able to do what you need. (Do a Yahoo! or google search for ‘online photo editing’ or just look around here as they seem to use Yahoo! Answers for advertising)
I know that Photoshop is the standard and I have used 4 versions of it in the last 8 years, now with CS3. BUT… for a fraction of the price ($199) you can use Aperture 2.0 from Apple (I think they also have a PC version). It has virtually replaced all that I need from Photoshop AND now companies like NIK Software are making great plug-ins for it giving it added ability.
Again, PS is great but I find that Aperture does nearly everything I need, 98% of the time.
Good luck
Adobe Photoshop defines this industry, so you might as well start with the real thing.
The full professional version is over $600. But you can get Photoshop Elements 6 for either PC or Mac for less than $100.
It’ll do everything you need for a very long time. and if you ever get to the point where you outgrow Elements, well, you know what’s next.
well, Photoshop is really good, but it is too expensive
If you just want to retouch your photos, I suggest you visithttp://www.tucia.com.
Photoshop
Expensive Though.
Photoshop is the standard. . . and for that you will pay a high price.
